It can be difficult to maintain a consistent self-care routine during the holiday season. Social obligations, extended schedules, changes in diet and financial stress can leave you feeling mentally and physically depleted. While you're in the spirit of giving, it's imperative that you take some time for yourself. There are some simple ways to find balance and take care of yourself through the holidays:
Practice good sleep hygiene. (see last month's newsletter for tips on enhancing sleep quality) Sleep is a time for your body to relax, repair and restore. With less downtime, it becomes even more important to maximize your sleep and waking hours.
Meditate. Take a few minutes to quiet your thoughts each day. Consistency is key to a successful meditation practice, so try picking a time that will work for you every day. Upon waking in the morning and before you are inundated by your to-do list is often a perfect time.
*Pro-tip: MIZU's Floatation Therapy pod is an excellent place to get in a weekly meditation session.
Move your body. Although you might not be able to make it to that cycle or crossfit class 3-5 times a week, spending just a few minutes connecting to your body is better than doing nothing at all. Make time for a quick walk, stretch session or short yoga routine every day. You'll feel the difference.
Up your herbal game. With changes in weather, more time spent indoors and stress, the body can use the additional immunity support. Herbal teas are an easy way to take and enjoy the medicinal benefits of herbs like echinacea and ginger. Have a warm cup of tea first thing in the morning and throughout the day.

HERB OF THE MONTH: Chamomile
Chamomile, a member of the Asteraceae family, has nearly a 5,000 year history as an herbal remedy. With hundreds of derived secondary metabolites including multiple flavonoids, it is used primarily in the form of medicinal teas and extracts. High in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, chamomile is recommended for a variety of healing applications from digestion to eczema. Chamomile is probably best known for its calming and sleep inducing properties which help reduce anxiety and overcome insomnia.
